“He that hath a trade, hath an estate ” – Ben Franklin
Why are People Changing Jobs and Careers so Often?
Why does the US Bureau of Labour now indicate that on average people will be changing careers 5-7 times throughout their working lives? Why are people changing jobs 10-15 times throughout their working lives? Could one of the major reasons be that people are looking for meaning and significance in their career/work instead of merely working for provision?
The sad reality is more than 80% of people in the workforce dislike their jobs. This is sad because only when passion and purpose collide, can we achieve maximum productivity in our lives and careers. I believe where energy goes, results flow. It makes no sense spending two-thirds of your life doing something you hate. If you live a long life, you will be working two-thirds of the time. Why should you be miserable at work for two-thirds of your life?
People who are miserable at work are usually stressed and this often leads to illnesses such as hypertension, ulcers and heart attack. This will cost both employee and employer more in the long run. Unhappy workers perform at reduced levels of productivity and in the end this affects the profitability of the organization. There may be high turnovers which in end costs the company more through time lost in recruiting new workers, waiting for new worker to settle in and may require training to restore levels of productivity. It can result in poor customer service and loss of revenue for your business.
Work/Career Fulfillment
My new book Design to Win Road Map is geared towards helping you discover what would constitute a fulfilling life and career for you. It will help you to take the steps necessary to pursue your ideal life and career. In Chapter six we explore the idea of career/work fulfillment. What are your criteria for career fulfillment? It is important that you pause to think about this carefully. Whatever your criteria for work/career fulfillment, I believe these five ingredients are vital. It should include a job that provides:
1. A mix of income and impact – ideally you should aim to get your preferred salary and levels of responsibility and see yourself making a difference in the world.
2. Passion and purpose – It should enable you to fulfil your goals, support your philosophy of life, values and your preferred lifestyle. Ideally you should work and live in your preferred geographical setting
3. Your work/career should make life a joy and not a burden. It is work that takes you look forward to Mondays and getting out of bed each day.
4. It should enable you to utilize your favourite transferrable skills and your best gifts for the glory of God and the greatest good, in a manner that makes you feel proud of your work.
5. It should be work that utilizes your favourite subjects, knowledges and fields of interest.
The best way to figure out those five things is to do a self-inventory and document your answers, then find or create work that matches 80% of your desires.
My Career /Work Fulfillment Map
I have taken time to think through what career fulfillment looks like for me. In my case, career fulfillment is not only knowing that my work is making an impact but looking forward to my work at least 90% of the time. Ultimately, it is seeing lives transformed and working in a manner that provides the greatest level of freedom and flexibility, to enable me to travel and empower people around the world. This means that ultimately I cannot be tied down to a traditional 9-5 job or the traditional working environment. It also means that I am simply not content to just work for money. My purpose must collide with my work and my work should be profitable so that I am not struggling to survive financially.
Career fulfillment is really life fulfillment. It’s doing work that fits well with your core values, purpose, gifts, and passions. It is having proper work-life balance—affords time for friends, family, leisure and other causes. It’s doing work you love and doing it effectively. A fulfilling life and career is a winning life and career. Our Design to Win Road Map is your ideal compass to achieve a winning life and career.
