BEING CLUELESS

Ever since I wrote my first book (2015), I wanted to become an Amazon Bestseller. In publishing the first I created a launch team, studied the process and tried to implement the Bestseller system. But alas, it did not work! I was very disappointed.

When I published my second book (2016), I tried again and the book was at one point #8 in one category of the Amazon store. I felt like I failed again, even though 300 persons downloaded my book in a week. In 2018, I tried again with my 4th book, Design to Win Road Map. It was #1 in the education category on Amazon for a week and in the top 100 for three months after our promotional campaign in October 2018. Once again, I thought I had failed and decided that I was going to hire a company to do it for me since I had not cracked the code.

Then I read a book, Publish. Promote. Profit and it dawned on me that I was an Amazon Bestselling author already, twice over. I did extensive research to confirm. Somehow in the process, I was blind to what I already had because I was not in the top 100 of all 8 million books selling on Amazon but just two categories. This in itself is powerful. Less than 1% of people are writing. Amazon has over 8 million books. My book was not just #1 for an hour or a day but an entire week and had an overall sales rank of less than 3000 of out all the 8 million books on Amazon.

I was clueless to what I had and was about to pay to get what I already had and wanted.

This experience speaks volumes. The first step in the Design to Win process is “Discovery” which is about learning about your gifts, abilities, skills, assets and desires. If you don’t discover what you have, you may pay a great price chasing what you already possess. You may miss out on opportunities to leverage what you already have. Apart from a bragging right, being a bestseller positions you as the go-to person in your field. It can catapult your business if leveraged well. For two years, I was chasing what I already possessed and feeling frustrated. Are you frustrating yourself about things that are already solved?

It’s like operating like a poor person and getting into debt when some rich uncle has bequeathed millions to you but you don’t know it! It’s time for your own eyes to be opened. One way of opening your eyes is to read more and learn more daily. It was reading that God used to open my eyes. “Who says you don’t have a bestselling book?” That thought prompted me to research and verify my book status, the very evening before my appointment with a company to buy an expensive package.

Sometimes the grass looks greener on the other side because you don’t know you have the resources to make your grass green. In this New Year, become more self-aware. Do an asset inventory of yourself. Instead of looking at your deficiencies, search for what you have. What are you good at? What skills and knowledge do you already possess that you can leverage for impact and income? Before you go searching elsewhere start within.
